If pain from osteoarthritis in the spine, knee or shoulder persists despite standard nonsurgical measures, radiofrequency ablation (RFA) offers another option short of surgery. RFA uses radio waves to destroy nerves causing joint pain. It is a less invasive option for people who do not want to undergo surgery, want to delay it, or are unable to have surgery and want an alternative to pain-relieving medications.
