Obesity, Inactivity Increase Risk of Fibromyalgia Pain

A recent study provides one more reason to stay trim and fit.

Being overweight is a strong and independent risk factor for fibromyalgia in women, particularly for those who are inactive, according to a recent study. Researchers have found that women who were overweight, compared to women of normal weight, had close to double the risk of developing fibromyalgia, a chronic illness characterized by musculoskeletal pain, general fatigue, and sleep disturbance. Women who were overweight and did not engage in leisure-time physical activity were at even greater risk-more than twice that of normal-weight women. The study was published in the May 2010 issue of Arthritis Care & Research.
