Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are widely used pain relievers that are often used for musculoskeletal conditions, such as arthritis, back pain and tendinitis, as well as for pain control after surgery. There are many NSAIDs, both over the counter (OTC) and in prescription strengths. The NSAIDs many people reach for are the ones available OTC—ibuprofen (Advil®, Motrin®) and naproxen (Aleve®).
