The statistics are scary: Medication errors are experienced by at least 1.5 million Americans annually, according to a 2006 report by the Institute of Medicine. And if youre like many Americans, you take more than one prescription, which means multiple chances to fall victim to pharmaceutical mistakes. Pharmacies are implementing new programs to prevent mix-ups, says Jennifer Fulmer Groves, R.Ph., M.P.H., director of Cleveland Clinics Medication Safety Services. Some use bar-code scanning technology, while others use photographs to double-check prescriptions as theyre dispensed.
