For people with severe osteoarthritis in the knee, hip or shoulder who can’t get adequate pain relief from nonsurgical measures, joint replacement is an option. This surgery is generally successful, allowing most people who have it to return to activities free of chronic pain. The implants used to replace the joint are designed to last a long time. Depending on your age, they may last a lifetime.
