Four Moves to Ease Morning Pain and Stiffness

Some days, as the saying goes, it doesnt pay to get out of bed. This is especially true when you, and your joints, get older. When your joints havent moved for a long period of time, says Gary Calabrese, director of Sports Health and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation at Cleveland Clinic, your synovial fluid, the lubricating fluid in and around your joints, settles. The key to easing morning stiffness is getting the body prepared prior to getting out of bed. A set of flexing and extending movements, like those below, concentrate on the bodys lower quarter. Most people feel morning stiffness in their lower back and hips, says Calabrese, so these exercises are important to prepare your body for upright positioning.
