Taking calcium supplements to protect your bones may cause problems for your heart. In recent trials comparing calcium supplements-of any type and any dose, with or without vitamin D-with a placebo, an increased risk for heart attack and stroke was detected. Researchers at the University of Auckland in New Zealand analyzed the data of 36,000 women and found that those who were already taking calcium supplements and vitamin D showed no signs of increased risk, while those who were not taking calcium and vitamin D before the trial were found to be at greater risk for heart disease. They concluded that the sudden change in calcium levels when starting a supplement may be responsible for the increased risk.
