Are rotator-cuff tears all in the family? According to a study in the May issue of The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, people with relatives who have experienced rotator cuff injuries are at increased risk of similar injuries themselves. After tracking 3,091 patients with rotator cuff tears, researchers at the University of Utah School of Medicine found that the risk extended out to and beyond third-cousin relationships. Although it is unclear why this occurs, the studys authors maintain that their findings are a springboard for attempting to identify the injurys genetic component and may lead to future options for the prevention and treatment of rotator cuff injuries.
