In this age of cutting-edge science, one of the most effective treatments for arthritis remains an old-fashioned one: exercise. "Its a common myth that if you have arthritis you cant exercise. In fact, exercise will reduce joint pain and stiffness, and it promotes overall health," says Gary J. Calabrese, a physical therapist and director of Sports and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation at Cleveland Clinic. Arthritis patients who participated in an eight-week,,18-site People with Arthritis Can Exercise (PACE) program saw improvements in symptoms, such as pain and fatigue, as well as function, according to a study published in the Feb. 15 issue of Arthritis & Rheumatism.
