More than 300,000 Americans are hospitalized annually due to hip fractures, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and more than 20 percent of those patients will die within a year of their injury. Add to these statistics the fact that only one in four patients will completely recover from a hip fracture, and its clear why keeping your hips in good health is so important. "Bone health starts when youre young, but even when you get older, there are things you can do to keep your bone mass up," says Robert M. Molloy, MD, an orthopaedic surgeon at Cleveland Clinic.
