If you suffer with joint pain from arthritis, its not surprising if it affects your mood. Cleveland Clinic rheumatologist Carmen Gota, MD, often encounters this. One of my patients has osteoarthritis in several joints and he feels frustrated and discouraged because he cant do the gardening he enjoys or wash his car, she says. These feelings are not unusual. Even if you are able to manage your pain, having a chronic medical condition is life changing. Its normal to feel sad about it, says Dr. Gota. For some people sadness turns into depression.
