Even though its relied upon by many, the use of acetaminophen-best known as Tylenol-is not helpful in managing acute low-back pain, according to a study reported online in The Lancet (July 23, 2014). The research found the drug was no more effective than a placebo pill for more than 1,600 people suffering from lower-back pain. In addition to showing no effect in easing pain, the study also found that acetaminophen was not helpful in improving sleep troubles tied to back pain, or improving patients overall quality of life. The drug might not be of primary importance in the management of acute lower-back pain, the studys lead author reported.
