A distal radius fracture is a break in the radius bone near your wrist. These common fractures often are caused by falls onto an outstretched hand, especially in older adults, but athletes and younger individuals also can be affected. In some cases, the fracture can cause a visible deformity, pain, swelling and difficulty moving the wrist. Risk of this fracture varies (see box). This fracture requires prompt evaluation from a healthcare provider.
