Many people with osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis wake up with sore, stiff hands. For those with osteoarthritis, which is caused by the wearing down of cartilage in joints, stiffness may last for a few minutes. For those with rheumatoid arthritis, which is an autoimmune disease, the pain may continue for a couple of hours.
